Ugarte (SEA): “Due to our business structure, I do not see the option of a four-day work week”
The general director of the Álava employers’ association argues that this initiative has a “difficult fit” in Álava due to its industrial nature. “The market wouldn’t allow it,” he adds. Regarding the current situation, he admits that “there is activity” but also a “clear margin problem”.

Euskaraz irakurri: Ugarte (SEA): “Gure enpresa egituragatik, ez dut aukerarik ikusten lau eguneko lan astea ezartzeko”
The CEO of the employer BE Empresas Alavesas, Juan Ugarte, see non-viable set the four day work week in Álava territory, mainly due to its marked cut industrialsince the costs would skyrocket.
“Álava is the most industrial province in Spain, mainly an exporter and we compete in the world. If we drastically reduce the working day, what happens is that our costs are going to rise significantly. Is the market willing to pay those cost increases? I honestly think not,” he argued.
In an interview with Radio Euskadi’s “Boulevard” program, Ugarte was questioned about the pilot program that the city of Valencia will test for a month to measure the impact of reducing the working week on mobility, health, the economy or leisure. According to the businessman from Álava, this initiative could work in communication or telecommunications companies, but not in industrial companies.
On current economic situation, Ugarte has pointed out that the uncertainty at the international level has now been joined by financing problems and financial costs, which has meant that operating costs are “delicate”. “There is activity, but there is a clear problem of margins, all these elements are affecting the operating account.”
