With Holy Week about to end, the sector of tourism has made a first balance of these five days of vacation and its impact on the Basque Country. According to data collected by Euskadi Irratia, occupancy in hotels and agrotourisms has been 80-90%, lower than that registered in 2022 and also in pre-pandemic.

The spokesman for Destination Bilbao, Joseba Goirigolzarri, explained that hotel occupancy has been around 90% at Easter and that for Easter Week it will be 60-65%, thanks to last-minute reservations. The data is worse than last year, showing that pre-pandemic levels have not yet been reached. “We have not reached the pre-pandemic data, from 2018 or 2019, and we do not expect to arrive in the next two years either,” she admitted.

According to Goirigolzarri, the weight of foreign tourists has been notable, especially the French.

As for the farmhouses, occupancy was 80% at Easter, also below the data for 2022. For Easter Week, an occupancy rate of 26% is guaranteed, six points less than last year. Nekatur’s manager, Idoia Ezkurdia, recalls, however, that Easter 2022 was special, due to the boom in tourism after the pandemic.

Ezkurdia has revealed that the majority of tourism has been internal and that Álava has registered the best data. As he has pointed out, the rise in the CPI has been noted: “Last year we mostly had four-night stays; this year most have been three“.

In the absence of data from San Sebastian hotels, the San Sebastian Aquarium expects to exceed the figure of 14,000 visitors this Holy Week, a figure similar to that of the previous year. The aquarium has indicated in a statement that, without counting the data for this Monday, a total of 11,822 people have passed through its facilities from last Thursday to Sunday.

One last fact: the airports of Euskal Herria (Bilbao, Hondarribia, Foronda, Noain and Biarritz) have more than 170 flights scheduled for today.
