Pension reform: minimum pension would be S/400 with 15 years of contributions, the Labor Commission proposes

The Labor and Social Security Commission of the Congress seeks with its prediction on the reform of the pension system, to reduce the years required for Peruvians to receive a pension at the time of retirement.

According to the text, members of the Universal Integrated Pension System (SIUP) — which would contemplate the ONP and the AFPs — they must contribute for 15 years or register 180 contribution units to have a minimum pension equivalent to 40% of their income. In the simplest example, a Peruvian who earns the basic salary (S/1,025), would receive S/410 monthly.

Sigrid Bazanpresident of said commission, acknowledges that although the amount is less than the S/500 currently given by the ONP, the reduction in the requested years of contribution makes up for it.

And, for those who contribute between 10 and 15 years, they will be assigned a proportional pension; while for those who gave 5 to 10 years, there will be compensation.

Finally, those who have contributed for less than 5 years will automatically be beneficiaries of Pension 65, added the economist Fernando Cuadros Luque, technical adviser for the preparation of the pension reform proposal.

What is the SUP?

The SIUP would be the system that encompasses pension administrators as part of the National Autonomous Pension Manager (Ganapen).

The pension reform — Bazán added — would have three pillars: non-contributory, where Pension 65 and Contigo would join; contributory, for dependent, independent and informal workers and complementary, for those who earn more than 5 RMV.
