The Arequipa cattle union sent a letter to the management of the company glory, to negotiate a new price range. It is worth remembering that the firm buys fresh milk from the producers for its industrialization and to manufacture different derivatives.
The letter was sent on March 22 to Claudio Rodríguez Huaco, the company’s new general manager. The ranchers’ proposal is that the price range be based on the price of yellow grain corn, cattle feed. The initiative seeks to protect prices against abrupt increases or decreases in said commodity.
The farmers made the letter public on Monday in the Agricultural Society of Arequipa (SADA). The president of the Regional Council of Milk, Gianni Simoni, maintained that the average price Gloria pays per liter of fresh milk is S/ 1.35, while the production value is around S/ 1.76, although he specified that this varies depending on the producer. He asks that at least each breeder have a 10% return.
Simoni indicated that there are fewer and fewer farmers between Arequipa, Cusco and Puno due to low profitability. The last assault by a mob in December 2022 on the Gloria and Laive plants in El Pedregal only made the situation worse, reducing the daily collection by 50%.
However, he also pointed out that the concentration of purchases is in three companies (Gloria, Nestlé and Laive) as the cause of the low profitability for farmers, giving little room for negotiation.
As a palliative measure, he asked the Regional Government to buy the milk from the farmers for its different social programs. He indicated that this requires the Region to acquire a UHT plant to process the resource that it would acquire from local producers.
He added that given the situation, a group of ranchers would be migrating to other regions such as Apurímac to take advantage of their natural pastures for food, given the fluctuations in the price of corn.
