Osinergmin: 4.8 million families at risk of being left without electricity due to the El Niño phenomenon

He Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining (Osinergmin) reported that, after the nationwide passage of landslides and rains caused by Cyclone Yaku, 4 power generation plants (126 MW) were affected, of which the main one is the Quitaracsa Hydroelectric Power Plant (117 MW).

The regulatory body specified that Quitaracsa is still under “restoration evaluation.” Meanwhile, the other 3 plants affected “are smaller and add up to 8 MW.” In the same way, the monitoring of the “economic impact on the operation of the system” continues, said Omar Chambergo, president of the Board of Directors of Osinergmin before the Consumer Defense Commission of Congress.

In electrical transmission, 2 structures of 2 transmission lines and a substation (SET-CHAO Transmission Substation) were affected. They did not affect the normal electricity supply, that is, they did not generate interruptions and there are currently no effects.

In this sense, the commissioning of 3 hydroelectric plants that were affected in their infrastructure due to the rains (390 MW) was monitored. However, 11 smaller plants are unavailable due to the high concentration of solids (97 MW).

“However, the unavailability of these plants did not generate interruptions in the supply of the National Interconnected Electric System due to having a reserve margin,” Osinergmin reported.

Osinergmin: vulnerability to the El Niño phenomenon

On the other hand, Osinergmin found areas of vulnerability for electricity generation, transmission and distribution in the event of an eventual passage of the El Niño phenomenon in our country.

Regarding generation and transmission, risk areas for electricity supply were identified in Piura (17), La Libertad (16), Cajamarca (23), Lambayeque (21), Áncash (5) and Lima (4).

For distribution, Chambergo pointed out that there are 4 million 778,000 supplies “that could be vulnerable” in regions with strong and extreme rainfall. “As you can see, the risk of impact is high,” he wrote.

“All the Generation and Transmission concessionaires have been alerted, indicating the possible effects during the rainy season,” said the official.
