Pitahaya and strawberries heading to the top 10 of agro-exports

Peruvian agro-exports will bet this year on the diversification of their offer, boosting in the international market products such as frozen strawberries, pitahayapassion fruit and pomegranate, revealed the director in charge of Promperú, Ricardo Limo del Castillo.

The official stressed that these products have had a “quite significant growth” in recent years, so it would be a matter of time before they begin to lead shipments abroad. “They are in the process of reaching the top 10, I think that in the next few years we will get there. We are on that route.” Limo commented to The Republic.

Currently, non-traditional agricultural exports are led by blueberries, grapes and avocados, in that order.

In the case of pitahayas, this fruit mobilized around US$18,168 last year, and ranked 451 in the agro-export basket; however, it achieved a year-on-year advance of 105.3%. While in January 2023 it climbed to place 303, and generated US$3,063, which meant a growth of 296.19% compared to the same month of the previous year.

New markets

The opening of new markets is another strategy to diversify agricultural exports, stressed the representative of Promperú.

In this regard, he indicated that the US and European markets are “very concentrated”, which is why he is betting on the Asian continent. “As for mangoes, we are doing all possible analyzes so that it is not only focused on the US or Europe, but it can also go to Asia,” he mentioned.

Finally, he pointed out that in countries of the region, such as Brazil, there is “a very great interest” by foods such as garlic, onions, mushrooms, sacha inchi and functional products.

Data

Forecast. This year it is estimated that agricultural exports will reach US$10.6 billion. Last year they managed to mobilize more than US$9.8 billion.

Chance. The 15th Expoalimentaria, which will take place from September 27 to 29, could generate business for more than US$320 million, ADEX estimated.
