The Basque Autonomous Community recorded last year 1,051 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity production from renewable sources, which represents 11.2% of the total territory. Likewise, last year the wind energy production in Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa increased by 7.1% compared to 2011 and hydroelectricity decreased by 25.7% mainly due to the fact that 2022 was very dry. These are data that the Red Eléctrica group has released today in its annual report.
Total Basque energy generation increased by 37.4% during the past year, to 9,375 GWh. During 2022, the CAV’s generation park had 2,966 MW, with hardly any variations throughout the year. Of these, 66.4% corresponded to the combined cycle, in addition to cogeneration (15.4%), hydro (6%) and wind (5.2%).
The report adds that the green installed capacity of the region represented 15.8% of the total.
The demand for electricity in the Basque Country stood at 15,232 GWh in 2022, 4% less than in the previous year, and accounted for 6.1% of the consumption registered in the Spanish State.
