Low expectations of tourist arrivals for Holy Week in Arequipa

The projections of the businessmen of the tourism sector in Arequipa are not positive with respect to the month of April, in which Holy Week is held. Jorge Valderrama Salinas, former president of the Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (AVIT), told The Republic that due to the political and social crisis, the climatic situation due to Cyclone Yaku and now the warning of the Coastal Child, there will not be a large influx of tourists in the Arequipa region.

It is estimated that there would be 10 to 15 percent of what was received in previous years, when only at Easter 20,000 to 40,000 visitors arrived. They would have between 7 to 12 thousand tourists.

At the beginning of the year, when the protests against the government of Dina Boluarte80% of tourist packages purchased to visit Arequipa, reserved for the first months of 2023, were cancelled.

Valderrama said that the central government and the authorities of the sector have to promote national tourism so that citizens of other regions visit Arequipa, since receptive tourism is far from arriving.

The Regional Management of Foreign Trade and Tourism projected an influx between 8 to 10 thousand people for this date, especially for the Colca Canyon.
