The Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel) reported that, during the first half of 2021, investments in the telecommunications sector registered a cumulative recovery of S / 1,057 million, an advance of 36.3% compared to the same period in 2020.
The report Analysis of the Financial Performance of the Telecommunications Sector, prepared by the Directorate of Regulatory Policies and Competition (DPRC) of Osiptel, shows that the investments of Viettel, Claro, Entel and Telefónica registered growth rates of 98.3%, 56.2 %, 47.5% and 13.5%, respectively, in this period.
Meanwhile, the investments of DirecTV and Americatel (the latter, of the Entel group), which represented 0.6% of total investments, were reduced by 46.6% and 46.2%, respectively, until the end of June .
Osiptel: cell phone sales recover
During the first half of 2021, operating income in the telecommunications sector recovered significantly, after registering a growth of 16.8%, compared to the same period of the previous year.
In this period, the dynamics of income from the business line stands out equipment sale, which increased by 119.5%, compared to the first six months of 2020, explained by the relaxation of isolation measures and the reopening of traditional service channels.
“It should be noted that, with this result, the sale of equipment has already exceeded the prepandemic levels, registering a growth of 7.4% (equivalent to S / 143.4 million more) compared to the S / 1,940.1 million reported in the first semester of 2019 ″, says the report.
Osiptel: mobile services and fixed internet
In that period, the income from the business lines also stood out. mobile services and fixed internet, which increased 8% and 11.5%, respectively, compared to the first half of 2020 and, together, represented 57.2% of the sector’s operating income during the first half of this year.
This as a consequence of the greater number of mobile lines and fixed internet connections, in a context in which these services (as in the same period in 2020) continued to stand out as essential.
Osiptel: low performance of Telefónica
Regarding the financial performance of the operating companies in the sector, Of course and Viettel stood out as the companies with the highest EBITDA margin (income before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) with 30.6% and 36.2%, respectively, among the four largest telecommunications companies in Peru, result associated with higher operating income, which increased by 19.9 and 15.1 percentage points each.
On the other hand, like the same period of the previous year, Entel it continued to record positive operating results and maintained an EBITDA margin of 17.5%, in a context in which it recorded 15.5% more income in mobile services and in which it reported lower income from disposal in the sale of towers.
By contrast, Telefónica recorded the lowest operating performance with an EBITDA margin of 11.6%, due to the fact that its revenues only increased 3.2%, which was not enough to offset the increase in its operating expenses. Likewise, it recorded net losses, associated with the higher accounting provision for income tax, due to the tax controversy it has with Sunat.
