Only 2% of construction companies suspended almost all their operations in a pandemic

Less than 5% of the firms in the construction sector almost entirely (60% -80%) suspended their operations due to the pandemic, according to Marsh’s recent “COVID-19 and construction sector” study. On the contrary, 39% estimate that, currently, their activities continue to advance at their full capacity.

Likewise, monitoring the health status of workers in the construction sector has been one of the main measures taken by companies. 95% made constant evaluations of employees, either under their own service or by third parties; 29% of the organizations provided balloons or oxygen concentrators; and 14% provided ambulance service for the transfer of employees to the health center.

“Despite the fact that 86% have totally or partially paralyzed their operations, we see that the sector has been recovering optimally. (…) Companies that adapt quickly and invest in programs that guarantee the health and well-being of their employees will be better prepared to respond and recover from the impacts of this pandemic, ”said Percy Mesías, VP of Occupational Safety.

In this line, companies in the construction sector that develop in the areas of concrete and asphalt, transport of materials, preparation or excavations, among others, have not registered significant suspensions.

Thus, 16% of these companies suspended between 5% and 10% of their operations; 14% failed between 20% and 40%; and 11% only suspended 5% of activities in face-to-face venues, offices or others.

“The pandemic has forced companies in the sector to adapt their operations to regulatory requirements, implementing measures that allow them to guarantee the health and safety of their employees, as well as preserve the continuity of their operations,” Mesías stressed.

The data

Until the beginning of the second semester, the construction sector was projected to register growth of 6.7% compared to the same period in 2020, according to the Peruvian Chamber of Construction (Capeco).
