The lehendakari, Inigo Urkulluhas said that the Basque Country “will need time” to adapt to the reality of the electric vehicle, “a change that will not be easy and will require a great effort”.
Urkullu recalled that Germany or France have shown their concern about the horizon established by the European Union to ban the sale of new combustion cars in 2035, which “is just around the corner.”
In this sense, he added that “adaptations as important and necessary as this one need the commitment of everyone and, of course, they must take into account all the realities, without a doubt, very heterogeneous in the European territory”.
In any case, he assured, “we look to the future with confidence and optimism”.
Urkullu accompanied by the councilors Idoia Mendia and Arantxa Tapia, attended this Friday the inauguration of the new building of the AIC automotive center, in Amorebieta-Etxano.
In his speech, Urkullu assured that the automotive sector it is “vital” for the Basque Country and has encouraged companies in the sector to continue “undertaking, investing, innovating and generating quality employment opportunities”, so that the Basque Country continues to maintain “its privileged position”. At this point he recalled that the automobile industry represents 25% of the Basque GDP and that three companies – Gestamp, CIE Automotive and Grupo Mondragón – are among the top 100 in the world.
