8% of women are CEOs in companies globally, according to Bloomberg

More than 600 companies from 45 countries, including Peru, were evaluated for the Gender Equality Index 2023 Made by Bloomberg. Among the main results, it stands out that of the companies evaluated, only 8% of women are CEOs or executive directors.

The index has 7 pillars, and although it shows a positive evolution, there are still important areas for improvement. For example, from 2018 to 2022, the representation of women with respect to leadership has gone from 40% to 53%, in terms of equal pay it has gone from 40% to 64% and in the application of policies against sexual harassment from 50% to 70%.

“Women on boards make up 32%, it is not about reaching 100% because that would mean that all would be women in these positions, but this percentage shows that we are halfway there because equal representation on a board would be 50 % women, 50% men (…) It is necessary that from the initial levels there are more women and this is already observed”, said Jesica Bianconi, Market Specialist & ESG Advocate at Bloomberg.

How to promote the inclusion of women in the technology sector?

Mariana Costa, Founder of Laboratorio, commented that technology has changed many aspects of our lives and today to access products and services that respond to the reality and needs of women it is important that they are also behind the construction and design of these.

“We can do many things from different fronts, we believe that the task of advancing equal opportunities in the technology sector for women is not only for women but also for men, society, companies in the technology sector and educational institutions,” said Costa.

For her part, Gabriela Paranhos, regional director of Generation, points out that there is a need to think comprehensively and holistically about all the gaps that exist for women to access technology careers. In addition, she identifies 4 areas to get more women into this sector: empowering women from childhood, helping them overcome obstacles to access careers in technology, allow them to apply for inclusive jobs where their technical and socio-emotional skills will be assessedand that companies have inclusion practices where women feel safe that they will grow.

“When more women access technology careers, we are not only generating better economic results for businesses, but also for society,” Paranhos noted.
