The Minister of Equality has highlighted that with this measure “Basque families will directly receive 7,200 euros per son or daughter and another 4,800 more in the case of third parties and successive sons or daughters”, so that the benefit could reach up to 12,000 euro. Melgosa has added that the “Money that will be added to tax deductions and other aid and initiatives, such as free Haurreskolak, support for emancipation for young people or aid for reconciliation, for example.”

Melgosa has highlighted that this new aid is intended to face the demographic challenge, since, in recent years, Eustat data show that birth rates in the Basque Country are well below the European average and in continuous decline. In addition, sociological surveys reveal that Basque citizens have fewer daughters or sons than they would like to have, pointing out as the main cause economic reasons.

Although the application period has started today, the Basque Government has extended the possibility until October, for which reason Melgosa has sent a message of tranquility to the Basque citizens, since “all families with the right to payment” will receive the aid and, “In all cases, it will be retroactive.”

The request can be made electronically, as well as through the Zuzenean delegations (Bilbao, Donostia-San Sebastián and Vitoria-Gasteiz), at post offices and at town halls. This was announced by Melgosa during his visit to the Families and Childhood management team that manages and responds to requests for new aid.

From the Vitoria-Gasteiz Seminary, where a large part of the personnel in charge of managing this benefit is located, the counselor explained that the department is already working to “make the first payments in April” and that 65 workers will be assigned to this management. Likewise, she has reiterated a message of tranquility to the Basque citizenry, since “all families entitled to payment will receive their help and in all cases it will be retroactive.”
