Euskaraz irakurri: Antxoaren kostera gaur hasiko da Gipuzkoako eta Bizkaiko arrantzaleentzat
This midnight the anchovy season will begin for fishermen from Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, who will have the highest quota in recent years. They will be able to fish 17% more than last year, about 30,000 tons.
The figure is similar to that of recent years, but there are new developments, since the fine imposed in 2013 by the European Commission on Spain for overfishing mackerel has been significantly reduced. This year the quota will only be cut by 180 tons, and, starting next year, there will be no fine.
According to the Council of Scientists for Marine Research, there are enough anchovies in our waters. Thus, it has advised to capture 33,000 tons in the Bay of Biscay and the Bay of Biscay.
In this context, the arrantzales hope to improve the results of last year. Most of the quota is fished in spring and the rest in autumn.
