Import of biodegradable packaging grew 176% in 2022 after approval of the plastics law

The value of Peruvian imports of biodegradable containers and containers totaled more than US$24.7 million in 2022registering an important growth of 176% compared to the previous year, reported the Institute for Research and Development of Foreign Trade of the Chamber of Commerce of Lima (Idexcam).

The commercialization of these products was promoted by Law 30884, the plastics law, a regulation in force since 2018 that regulates the manufacture, import, distribution and consumption of single-use plastics, whose objective is to protect the environment and health from contamination. generated by the residues left by these products.

In relation to the imported volume, an increase of 251% is also observed, after the acquisition of more than 7 tons, which indicates that said law has led to a greater commercialization of said productssince many importers and distributors have been forced to buy biodegradable containers and containers abroad,” said the head of Idexcam, Óscar Quiñones.

Among the supplying countries, China is in first place since it concentrates 87% of the imports of these products, followed by Spain (4%) and Chile (3%).

What packages are imported the most?

Among the products with the highest imported value in 2022 are biodegradable containers with US$8.8 million (+211%), after the acquisition of 2.7 tons (+258%).

Biodegradable tableware follows with US$6.1 million (+170%) for the purchase of 1.8 tons (+304%) and biodegradable cups with an increase of 218% in value and 263% in volume. Meanwhile, imports of biodegradable bags and plates increased in value by 26% and 213%, respectively.

Idexcam noted that in recent years, non-plastic biodegradable packaging and films have begun to be mainstreamed as an alternative to standard plastic packaging.
