MEF: application of safeguards can be a “dangerous” mechanism for mypes

Multisectoral commission that evaluates the application of safeguards to Asian imports will meet this Thursday, February 23. The head of the MEF pointed out that Peru does not have much bargaining power in the international market, so implementing this measure would be detrimental to mypes in the textile sector.

The head of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), Alex Contrerasconfirmed to The Republic that this Thursday, February 23, the multisectoral commission that evaluates the application of safeguards to garments of Asian origin will meet to address this issue, since businessmen in the textile sector have been requesting that this measure be applied to mitigate the imbalance that exists in this market. Contreras announced that he does not consider that safeguards are a reactivation mechanism for mypes, on the contrary, “it can be very dangerous.”

“It must be understood that safeguards are not mechanisms that reactivate, on the contrary, they can be very dangerous. It is a temporary protection system, but in the end it can generate what is known as retaliatory measures. When you put a measure to try to protect yourself, what other countries do is also [implementar otras medidas similares] and considering the weight of Peru in international trade, we do not have much bargaining power, and on the contrary, many mypes would be hit,” explained the minister during the conference in which the plan was presented With Punche Peru Tourism.

The head of the MEF stressed that the strategy of the Ministry of Production (Produce) to reactivate mypes is the implementation of the Con Punche Productivo plan. Thus, most of the reactivation proposals presented by the Government are focused on this type of company.

“These S/2,000 million are mainly oriented to mypes, which will reduce the cost of credit, the acceleration of public investment, the development of the naval industry, the Con Punche Productivo program, everything points to the reactivation of mypes (…) Let there be no doubt that we are going to continue thinking about reactivation measures (…) there are interesting and key elements, beyond the safeguards”said Contreras.

It should be noted that the members of the multisectoral commission that evaluate the application of the safeguards are the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), MEF and Produce.
