Social development gap between men and women is 26%

The PUCP Center presented the Index of Social Development of Women and Men in the Regions of Peru 2021, in which it was evidenced that the social development of men is 26% higher than in the case of women in Peru and that in no region achieves a high level of social development; The purpose is to provide a comprehensive approach to the quantitative measurement of equality in the regions and to show how resources are distributed between women and men.

This study measures the reality of the regions of Peru from an analysis of the current situation of access to resources by women and men in four dimensions: education, health, autonomy and opportunities.

Among the main conclusions of the index is that the inequality It is a structural problem that is observed when analyzing the gaps in each of its dimensions. In terms of education, men are favored by 15% in 23 regions; In the second, with three regions, women achieve better scores with a difference in their favor of 11%.

In terms of health, men are favored by 25% in 22 regions; while women are favored by 11% in fewer regions: Huancavelica, Madre de Dios, San Martín and Loreto. Regarding autonomy, the difference is 45% in favor of the male gender as well as in opportunities where the gap is 28%.

In Metropolitan Lima, women have a low level of social development with 46.1 points and men in Moquegua and Arequipa have a low average level of social development with 58.2 and 57.3 points respectively. This analysis shows the social development of men and women in the coast, mountains and jungle.

It should be noted that the health variables analyze the effects of COVID-19 during the pandemic. The source of this index is the National Household Survey (ENAHO), on which the information reported by families depends.
