The President of the Government of Navarra, María Chivite, has confirmed that Volkswagen will invest 1,024 million euros in the Landaben plant between 2023 and 2027 to build a new assembly hall for the production of electric cars, and collection and sequencing of batteries. The ship will have 11,000 square meters, and would maintain its maximum production capacity at 400,000 cars per year.

The German multinational intends that the adaptation work to electrification be carried out this year and that in 2026 two models of electric cars will be produced.

In order to meet the objectives, the company will have the collaboration of the Provincial Government. María Chivite has communicated to Volkswagen’s management at their recent meeting in Wolfswurg (Germany) that her executive will designate the project of general interest for Navarra at tomorrow’s assembly for the more agile processing of permits and aid. Chivite has asked the company for a commitment to suppliers and employment.

From the Landaben works council, they affirm that it is good news, but they want to know the details to make sure that they will have a sufficient workload to guarantee the current 5,000 places.

Landaben currently manufactures 300,000 cars a year. For two years the plant will act as a mixed plant until it adapts to electrification. Electric cars will come out of the chain along with the current T-Cross, Polo and Taigo.
