The president of the Basque Hydrogen CorridorJosé Ignacio Zudaire, has announced that this year will see “the first results” of the work carried out during these two years by this public-private association —it is participated by 58 companies, eight institutions and 12 centers— with the obtaining of the first renewable hydrogen for use in industry, in mobility and in the maintenance of a building. “This will allow us to see a bit of how it behaves,” he added.
In an interview given to Radio Euskadi’s “Boulevard” program on the occasion of International Energy Day, Zudaire has also revealed that they are studying two locations of storage for this product, both in Biscayan territory —about 20 kilometers from Petronor, one of the Corridor’s leading companies— but with parts in Cantabria and Burgos. However, he has qualified that these “mega-stores” are planned for “a second phase, from 2030, when we have the big hydroducts. Until then we will work on more micro ecosystems”, he clarified.
Zudaire has stressed that, after the era of gas and renewables, “now is the time for hydrogen”, which will be an “essential” element for decarbonization, especially in industry. In this sense, he has reiterated the importance of public investment, without whose support the project would be “impossible”, and the development of regulations, which seem to “begin to move in Europe”.
Finally, he celebrated that the Basque Country “is on the hydrogen map”, since the large hydroducts are going to pass through the territory and it will have storage for this energy.
