Midagri: Peruvian rice exports to Colombia could reach up to 100,000 tons per year

Last year, between July and November, 18,993 tons of rice were exported to this country, thus representing 97% of the total exported to the world.

The potential rice exports to Colombia would reach around US$70 million per year with an average volume of 100,000 tons, amounts that could be reached as part of the lifting of the restrictions of the Government of said country in the Andean Communityas reported by the Directorate of Economic Studies of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (midagri).

“Peruvian rice has conquered the Colombian market due to its quality and very competitive price, which has allowed it to have the necessary conditions to consolidate itself in that neighboring country as one of its main suppliers with supply levels that could reach up to 100,000 tons. annual”, Midagri said in a press release.

For example, fromFrom September 1 to November 30, 2022, according to preliminary figures, 13,246 tons could be exported to this country, adding a total of 18,993 tons between July and November, thus representing 97% of the total exported to the world, which was 19,410 tons.

It should be noted that andl Peru is the first rice producer in the Andean Community, followed in importance by Colombia, then Ecuador and Bolivia. In addition, these nations are almost self-sufficient small producers, whose marketing flow among their members is carried out in certain seasonal periods; that is, when they have short-term production surpluses or deficits.

Export expectations

On the export potential of the cereal, currently around 50% of national production originates in the jungle, especially in the first rice region as it is San Martinfollowed by Amazon (Bagua), cajamarcaamong others.

“The Amazon, with limited access, produces rice all year round, a natural advantage that facilitates exports to Colombia, mainly in the first half of the year, when the country’s production falls and must be covered by imports,” points out the Midagri.
