People who work prefer to educate themselves remotely because they find a more flexible methodology, capable of adapting to their schedules, work and family responsibilities, says a specialist.

The current demand for virtual modality professional programs is constantly growing in Peru. A Boomerang study revealed that the number of Peruvians who study and work increased from 40% to 44.5%.

People who work prefer to educate themselves remotely because they find a more flexible methodology, capable of adapting to their schedules, work and family responsibilities, said Antonio Rodríguez Campra, director of Virtual Education at the Universidad Privada del Norte (UPN).

Rodríguez explained that, thanks to a modification to the Education Law in 2020, universities today offer distance undergraduate programs that are allowing thousands of people to access quality professional training.

This need to continue training professionally means that more and more working Peruvians choose to study online, he said. In addition, he added that the undergraduate courses with the greatest demand in the virtual modality are Psychology, Law, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering and Business.

The 100% online programs use a learning methodology that can be adapted to day-to-day tasks and provide support throughout the entire degree. “This modality is adapted to the times of the students, allowing their connection from any place and device”, indicated the director of Virtual Education of UPN.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic helped to develop the virtual modality in universities and institutes worldwide, the specialist warned that remote education requires a particular methodology, which goes beyond training in the use of digital platforms.

Rodríguez Campra added that specialized digital infrastructures are essential for better learning. For example, UPN uses Blackboard Learn for teacher-student interaction; Class Colaborate, for videoconferences; Cloud Labs and Citrix, to access virtual laboratories, among others. “These are tools used by the best universities in the world, which have proven usefulness in higher education at a distance”, said.

The specialist reached some suggestions for young people interested in studying a professional career in the 100% online modality:

  • Investigate and review 100% online educational proposals, which are quite common in European countries and the United States, where there are totally virtual universities.
  • Find out and consult the houses of higher education for the academic offer and the teaching methodology.
  • Identify the accreditations, certifications and quality supports offered by the teaching center of interest.
