Inflation in Metropolitan Lima reached 8.66% in January, the highest in 5 months

In July 2022, accumulated inflation was 8.74%, a figure that was decreasing, but in the first month of the year it showed an increase.

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported that, during the first month of 2023, the Consumer Price Index of Metropolitan Lima increased 0.23%, with an annual variation (February 2022-January 2023) of 8.66%, the highest in 5 months. Since, in July 2022, accumulated inflation was 8.74%, a figure that was decreasing.

The monthly result was influenced by the price increase observed in the consumer divisions: Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (0.67%), Restaurants and Hotels (0.53%), Miscellaneous Goods and Services (0.42%) and Recreation and Culture (0.34%).

To a lesser extent, the prices of the following divisions also increased: Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Narcotics (0.31%), Clothing and Footwear (0.27%), Health (0.26%), Furniture, Articles for the Home and Ordinary Maintenance of the Home (0.20%), Communications (0.18%) and Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (0.10%). On the contrary, the Transportation division reported a reduction in prices (-0.90%).

The rise in prices in Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages responds to the higher prices observed in the group of vegetables, legumes, potatoes and other tubers (7.7%), such as green peas (91.2%), Chinese onion (30.2%), %), carrot (29.5%), olluco (19.9%), corn (18.9%), Italian tomato (16.0%), broccoli (12.3%), lettuce (11.4% ), butternut squash (8.9%), yellow sweet potato (6.8%), white (3.0%) and colored potatoes (1.2%).

Prices without ‘food’ and ‘energy’ grew 0.05%

In the month of January 2023, the variation of the Consumer Price Index of Metropolitan Lima, without considering the food and energy divisions (core inflation), rose slightly by 0.05%.
