In 2022 investment in renewable energy for the first time was equal to that of fossil fuels

Last year, for the first time, resources allocated to green energy exceeded US$1 trillion. China and the United States led the investments.

In 2022, for the first time in history investment in green energy was the same as that addressed to the fossil fuels and amounted to US$ 1.1 trillion, according to the study Trends in investment in the energy transition in 2023 carried out by BloombergNEF.

According to the study, so far, investment in alternative energy, EVs and other energy sources, for example hydrogen, has never exceeded US$1 trillion. However, while this figure represents a 31% increase over 2021, it is only a tiny fraction of what is needed to substantially cut polluting greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.

BNEF calculates that during the rest of this decade the amounts invested each year in this transition must be multiplied by three so that the planet is in a position to achieve zero net emissions by 2050.

The largest volume of investments last year was placed in solar and wind energy, with US$495,000 million, which means an increase of 17% compared to 2021. However, EVs occupy a very close place, with US$466,000 million, and the figure for them worldwide is growing at a faster rate, with 54%.

As for the nations with the largest investments, close to half (US$546 billion) were made in China, while the United States was in second place with US$141 billion.

The money invested considers what was spent on the deployment of clean energy technologies, according to BNEF. Does not include $274 billion spent worldwide last year expanding and strengthening power grids, $79 billion invested in supply chains and
clean energy manufacturing or $119 billion in equity financing raised by energy companies
clean technology.
