Drivers and distributors of digital platforms and delivery represent 1.4% of the EAP

According to a study released by Comex, in April 2021, the leading partners of digital platforms and distributors of delivery services represented 1.4% of the Active Economic Population (PEA) occupied by Metropolitan Lima.

The survey “Impact of digital platforms on the Peruvian economy”, prepared by the Peruvian Institute of Economy (IPE) commissioned by the union, showed that around 70% of drivers and delivery partners consider the use of platforms as their main activity . The rest perceive it as a complementary activity to another job (23.5% on average), to their studies (4%, on average) or to housework (3%, on average).

Likewise, the report revealed that delivery partners and drivers use the mobility and transport platforms. delivery for their desire to be independent (37%). However, financial need is also another relevant reason, with 26%. While 18% prefer to do it because they earn a higher income, 16% use technology because they cannot find work as an employee.

Monetary gains

Meanwhile, it was learned that driver and delivery partners earn higher incomes than taxi and motorcycle drivers, respectively, despite working similar hours per week.

For example, the survey showed that, in Metropolitan Lima, affiliated drivers earn between S / 1,251 (complementary activity) and S / 1,831 (main activity) monthly, while taxi drivers only earn S / 1,534.

Delivery operators, for their part, collect between S / 908 (complementary activity) and S / 1,467 (main activity), compared to motorcycle drivers, who acquire S / 1,321 per month.

In addition, more than 70% of drivers and delivery partners are satisfied with the platforms and about 80% would like their activity to be permanent.

In general, the services of the mobility and delivery platforms are concentrated in Lima (including Callao). Thus, digital platforms predominate in Metropolitan Lima, with 99.8%, while delivery services are distributed as follows in the national territory: Metropolitan Lima (87.5%), Arequipa (4.5%) , Trujillo (3.4%), Chiclayo (1.4%), Piura (1.3%) and other regions (1.9%).

Impact on the economy

Sales through digital mobility and delivery platforms totaled S / 1,421 million in 2020, which meant a total impact on the Peruvian gross domestic product (GDP) of 0.25%.

This trend continued in the first months of 2021, mainly after the end of the second quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic ordered by the Government. In this way, in April of this year, through the digital mobility and delivery platforms, sales of S / 85 million and S / 43 million were generated, respectively.

Number of services

In this sense, the number of services requested through the digital platforms of delivery reached 2.6 million in April 2021 in Peru, almost double the 1.4 million services reached in early 2020, before the coronavirus pandemic.

In contrast, the pandemic and the prevention measures imposed considerably reduced the use of digital mobility platforms. In the fourth month of this year, 5.6 million mobility services were requested, 60% less compared to the number of services requested in the prepandemic period (14.1 million, February 2020).

Together, both platforms benefited 866,000 users and 58,000 drivers and delivery partners. In addition, 4,600 partner companies participated during the provision of delivery services.
