According to the latest EITB DATA report on taxation, one in every five euros of the Basque Country’s gross domestic product (GDP) goes to pay taxes, and the Basque tax burden is below the averages for Spain and the European Union. In an interview given to the “Faktoria” program of Euskadi Irratia, the Podemos candidate for deputy general of Gipuzkoa lamented that the Basque Country and Madrid compete in taxation to attract the rich and multinationals. “We cannot be so considerate of this type of multinational, their objective is never social, it is not to preserve jobs, nor to ensure the dignity of workers, their only objective is to increase annual benefits and when they do not meet that objective they are they immediately go to another country,” he added.

Look Echeveste believes that the fiscal model of the PNV and PSE-EE “it’s not fair or progressive” and pleads to change it. “We believe that it is important to give a twist to the issue, our objective cannot be to compete with Isabel Díaz Ayuso,” she pointed out.

The Podemos representative welcomes the start of the dialogue between the PNV and PSE-EE to change the tax system, but she sees electoral overtones to this announcement and wonders why this debate was not addressed a year or a few months ago.
