The Regulatory Council has assured that it is working on the necessary procedures that will allow the registration to be opened to viticulturists and wineries that comply with its specifications, with the aim of obtaining “the first wine vintage 2023” under the protection of this denomination.
The Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) ‘Arabako Mahastiak/Vineyards of Álava’ has announced this Monday that its objective is obtain the first wine of the 2023 vintage under the protection of this brand.
‘Viñedos de Álava’ is a project promoted by the Rioja Alavesa Winery Association (ABRA), endorsed by the Basque Government, to market wine under that label, but it is the European Union that ultimately has to issue a final resolution on the request for the creation of this new appellation of origin.
In a press release, the Regulatory Council assures that this body was established last January 21st and insists that the file for the application for recognition of this PDO in Europe “strictly and rigorously complies with current regulations concerning the fields of protection”.
He points out that the Council is working on the necessary procedures that will allow the registration to be opened to viticulturists and wineries that meet their specifications, with the aim of obtaining “the first wine vintage 2023” under the protection of this denomination.
He adds that this region has been “clamoring for many years” for a differentiation with DOC Rioja and the new brand ‘Arabako Mahastiak/Viñedos de Álava’ is today the “only viable project” to materialize the scope of protection of Alava vineyards.
The Regulatory Council of the Denomination of the DOCa Rioja (which shares vineyards in La Rioja, the Basque Country and Navarra) has agreed, for its part, to start legal actions in administrative and judicial proceedings before the Justice of the Basque Country, against “Viñedos de Álava”.
For his part, the Minister of Agriculture, Luis Planas, has conveyed his concern about this project and has assured that the Government supports the “unity and uniqueness” of the DOCa Rioja and has pointed out that the Alava project “It’s not going in the right direction”.
