The cleaning workers of Onkologikoa in San Sebastián begin their 20-day strike today

According to ELA, the cleaning staff hired full-time at Onkologikoa “earn about 20,000 euros a year, 25% less than street cleaning staff in Gipuzkoa”, which means that “in masculinized sectors that carry out similar work, they earn 5000 euros more per year”.

Today begins the 20-day strike in the cleaning of the Onkologikoa in San Sebastián, called by the ELA union. The 20 workers of the Ilunion company’s subcontracted cleaning service, mostly women, will protest to find a solution to their “precarious situation.”

At the press conference held last Tuesday in San Sebastián, ELA officials explained that the cleaning staff hired full-time at Onkologikoa “earn around 20,000 euros a year, 25% less than street cleaning staff in Gipuzkoa”, which means that “in masculinized sectors that carry out similar work, they earn 5,000 euros more per year because the patriarchal capitalist system does not grant the same economic value to the feminized sectors as to the masculinized ones.”

Given this, and taking into account the hiring and other working conditions, Onkologikoa’s cleaning staff has decided to negotiate a center agreement. The Ilunion company, awarded the cleaning service for the San Sebastian health center, however, “has rejected ELA’s proposal for a meeting on three occasions.”
