The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) reported this Tuesday that, between January and September of this year, mining investment grew by 21.3% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Along these lines, a total of 3,513 million dollars was executed, while in 2020 it barely reached 2,897 million dollars, the regions with the highest participation being Moquegua, Ancash and Ica.
In detail, Moquegua executed 981 million dollars as of September, and it was the region that concentrated the largest amount of mining investment with a participation of 27.9% of the total. This result was driven by the construction of the Quellaveco project.
It is followed by Áncash, with 348 million executed and a participation of 9.9%, and Ica, with 331 million (9.4% of the total). According to the BEM, at the end of the third quarter of this year, the three regions together accounted for 47.2% of all the investment executed.
Finally, only in September mining investments reached 502 million dollars, which is equivalent to an increase of 4.1% in relation to what was registered in the previous month (483 million) and an increase of 55.9% with respect to the same month of the previous year (322 million).
Employment picks up
On the other hand, the Mining Statistical Bulletin indicates that mining employment achieved the highest historical figure in September of this year and sex month after month of growth, generating 241,671 direct jobs, 35.2% more than in the same month of 2020 (178,803 jobs).
Regarding the annual evolution of employment in mining, so far in 2021, an average of 222 thousand positions have been reached, an amount that is far higher than the 178 thousand and 192 thousand of 2020 and 2019, respectively. These data even exceed the highest peak in the last 10 years (214 thousand in 2012).
