Midagri: Agricultural sector grew 11.5% in September, the highest figure so far this year

The agricultural sector grew 11.5% in September, compared to the same month last year, being the highest figure reached by the sector so far this year, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).

The highest record had occurred last July, when it grew by 11.1%, compared to the same month last year.

According to the results provided by the General Directorate of Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation of Policies of the Ministry, in the month of September, the agricultural subsector had a rebound in its growth figures of 18.3%, while the livestock subsector in 2 , 6%

For example, in the ninth month of the year, blueberry production stood out, growing by 60.7% (higher in Lambayeque, La Libertad and Ica), followed by wheat + 55.5% (favorable climate in La Libertad); avocado + 46.1% (larger surface area in Lima, Ica and La Libertad), among others.

The higher oil palm production was also highlighted + 38.0% (highlighted by Ucayali); artichoke + 36.9% (in Ica, Arequipa and Ancash); hard yellow corn + 29.4% (higher plantings and harvests in Lima, Ancash and La Libertad); and asparagus + 20.2% (mainly in Ica and Lima).

While the livestock activity in September increased by 2.6% compared to the same month of the previous year. Said result was mainly due to higher chicken production, which increased by 3.2% (placement of bb chickens in Lima, Arequipa and Ica), raw cow’s milk + 2.6% (Ayacucho, Cajamarca and Puno), pork +4 , 1% (Ica, Huánuco and Lima) and chicken eggs + 1.3% (higher production in Lima, La Libertad and Ica).

First nine months

On the other hand, Midagri reported that the agricultural sector in the third quarter of the year accumulated a growth of 2.7% compared to the same period in 2020, supported by the higher production of the agricultural subsector (+ 3.5%) as well as of the livestock subsector that increased its production by 1.4%.

In that period, the agricultural subsector registered a growth of 3.5%, basically due to the higher production obtained from blueberry, which grew by 42.8%, avocado + 15.6%, potato + 4.4%, grape +16, 4% and hard yellow corn + 15%.

Likewise, the highest productions of oil palm + 25.3%, mandarin + 7.5% and red hot pepper + 63% stand out.

Regarding the livestock subsector, in this period there was a growth of 1.4% whose result was mainly due to the greater production of: raw cow’s milk that grew by 3.0% (greater number of cows in production in Ayacucho, Cajamarca and Ica), chicken + 0.7% (in Lima, Arequipa and Ica), beef + 1.9% (in Cusco, Junín and Lima) and pork + 3.7% (in Lima, La Libertad and Ica).
