The water rate will rise an average of 19.12 euros per year in Bizkaia

The Consorcio de Aguas de Bilbao Bizkaia argues that the increase in the price of water “is necessary to meet the expenses derived from the provision of the service”.

The Bilbao Bizkaia Water Consortium has announced that in 2022 the water bill will rise per household an average of 19.12 euros per year.

This increase will be distributed among the four invoices issued each quarter, as agreed today by the general assembly of the Consortium. Specifically, the average increase, which is the result of the updating of rates for supply, sanitation and purification services, will be 0.128 euros per month.

The assembly has approved this increase due to the need to finance the modification in the calculation of the water canon and an update of the rate of 1,465 euros per month for average household consumption, as announced in a note.

Those responsible for the Water Consortium have recalled that this entity had been applying “sustained and progressive increases” in the water rate for years, except in the 2020 financial year when these prices were frozen due to the special circumstances of the pandemic.

However, the entity assures that various studies have found that “the current rates cover only about 86% of the expenses derived from the provision of the service “.

For this reason, the Consortium affirms that “it is necessary to progressively complete the cost of the integral water cycle to 100%, in compliance with the cost recovery principle of the European Water Framework Directive”.

On the other hand, the Water Consortium has approved today a budget for 2022 of 199.5 million euros, compared to 192.9 million last year, which represents an increase of more than 3% compared to the previous year.
