The delegation of Peruvian cheese producers achieved a historic victory by obtaining three gold, two silver and one bronze medals in the International Contest “Expo Queijo 2021”, held in Brazil and with the participation of the best samples Canada, USA Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and the 16 states of the host country, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).
The minister of the sector, Víctor Maita, reported that he provided technical assistance and training to Peruvian winners and participants through his affiliated entities and ratified the Government’s commitment to support peasants in family farming.
The Peruvian delegation triumphed, for example, in the matured cheese category (more than 60 days of maturation) with a Swiss cheese type, where the Association of Agricultural Producers La Perla del Paraíso in La Libertad, managed to take the gold medal.
A similar situation occurred in the matured cheese category (more than 30 days of maturation) in which the Lácteos Verano EIR plant in Lima with the Paria Vaché cheese type was able to win the gold medal. The gold medal was also achieved with the sample from the Misky Food SAC plant in Junín, which won in the young cheese category (less than 30 days of maturation).
While the silver medal in the matured cheese category (more than 30 days of maturation) was also obtained by the Lácteos Verano EIRL plant in Lima with the Danbo Vaché cheese; and in the young cheese category, the silver medal went to the Inversiones PERUALP SA plant in Pasco with the Camembert Floralp cheese. In addition, in the medium maturation category (between 30 and 60 days), the Montefino SAC plant in Ayacucho obtained the bronze medal.
The Midagri reported that the cheeses were registered in the different categories, depending on the characteristics of the raw material, use of lactic ferments, percentage of moisture in the cheese, type of curd, characteristics of the cheese mass, among others.
Participating regions
The Peruvian delegation was made up of samples of 12 cheese plants from 8 regions of the country, such as Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Junín, La Libertad, Lima, Pasco and Puno, the main cheeses being registered paria and Andean.
In the international contest in Brazil, held last weekend, 41 categories were determined and 800 cheeses were entered in total. At the end of the contest, the first 03 of each category were awarded.
Midagri revealed that in Peru there are approximately 450,000 milk producing families, where 85% of them are small producers of family agriculture, and only by giving added value to their products will they obtain greater profitability and benefits for a better quality of life.
The activities of the Agriculture sector seek to encourage and value the work of dairy producers, who supply raw material in the production of cheeses in the different regions. In addition, the consumption of this dairy derivative is promoted as it is a food with quality proteins and fats, which vary depending on the cheese, and which provides calcium, vitamin D and minerals such as potassium and phosphorus.
