The Minister of Energy and Mines, Oscar Vera Gargurevichreported that various private sector companies have shown their interest in participating in the construction of the South Peruvian Gas Pipeline, a project called to contribute to the massification of natural gas in the southern part of the country.
In dialogue with La República, the head of Minem specified that the Peruvian government not only manages the option of entrusting the project to the Fonafe electric companies, which on more than one occasion have shown their disagreement.
“In fact, there are several companies that have come to knock on the door of Minem for the execution [del proyecto de masificación]. They are private companies”, revealed Vera.
Regarding a possible special assignment to Petroperú, the minister indicated that, after the start-up of the New Talara Refinery, the oil company would be in a position to assume the administration of the gas pipeline without incurring greater financial imbalances.
“Petroperú could also do it, it is not necessary for it to make the investment. In the case of the refinery, it has not done so with its own funds or the State, but has sold bonds. If the project shows that it is profitable, the investors come, and this is similar [a la refineria de Talara]because a petrochemical plant is very efficient and generates profits”, expressed Vera Gargurevich.
“Petroperú, for example, could manage the gas pipeline, since it has people who have seen a project of more than US$ 5,000 million [la refinería]. We could recruit some of those personnel to help us. It is something that we are going to define at the moment (…) it is not that I am going to get money to invest, it would be to manage. The financing has to come with the project,” he added.
