go to a ATM with the intention of withdrawals to cover our expenses is a regular activity. However, external eventualities may occur that prevent this process from happening successfully. Some of the most common mishaps are card retention by the financial machine, delivery of counterfeit, broken or damaged bills. Do you know what to do in these cases? In this note we explain it to you.
What should I do if the cashier gives me a torn or damaged bill?
Among the most common events that occur in these cases, it may happen that the ATM gives us bills that are stained, written on, sealed, torn, torn, or stuck with adhesive tape. If it has happened to you, you can redeem it at any financial institution or at the same Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP)but you must meet some requirements:
- Have more than half of the bill.
- Have at least one of its two complete numbers.
- Be authentic on the front and back.
In that sense, if the ticket you were given is missing important details, such as the watermark, color-shifting ink, latent image, perfect registration or security thread, you will not be able to redeem it in all the places mentioned above. . You can only do it at the windows of the National Mint and in some branches authorized by the BCRP.
Likewise, the official portal of the BCRP specifies which are the cases in which it will accept the change.
Redemption of split tickets
According to the financial institution, a split bill is “an authentic bill that is missing a part”, and can be exchanged at any office in the financial system as long as it meets these requirements:
- Have more than half, containing the watermark, the ink that changes color, the security thread
- Have at least one of its series and complete numbering (horizontal or vertical)
- Have the front and back.

Exchange of damaged whole banknotes
In the case of this type of bills, which are real but due to their condition, they are not received in the different shops or other operations that we are going to carry out, they can be exchanged for us at an office of the financial system.
However, it is important to consider that the banknotes must necessarily contain the watermark, the ink that changes color and the security thread.
