With gas, diesel and energy from Colombia, it faces drought in Ecuador

Petroecuador reported that it will increase the supply of natural gas for the Termogas Machala power plant by 1 million cubic feet, “as part of the actions coordinated with the Government to face the drought produced by the strongest drought recorded in the last ten years in the country”.

Although the Ministry of Energy admits that “we are in a difficult situation” rationing is not expected to occur.

The state oil company reported this week the increase in this supply of natural gas from the Amistad field and that it was agreed upon jointly with the Electricity Corporation of Ecuador (Celec) and the Vice Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, and that this will not affect daily production. of the public company.

From the Vice Ministry of Electricity, Petroecuador was requested to carry out the actions to proceed with this increase in the supply of gas and thus increase the production of electrical energy in that Machala plant.

For his part, the Minister of Energy, Fernando Santos, has explained that there is no hydroelectric generation, that the thermal plants are not working well and that energy is being brought from Colombia (400 megawatts). Normally importing energy from Colombia costs the State $10 million (80 megawatts), but since more is now purchased, an additional $30 million is allocated.

While to supply the low flow of the hydroelectric plants, diesel is being used and that represents “literally burning banknotes”, the minister commented to Teleamazon. The Secretary of State calculates that facing this drought will cost the country between $300 million and $400 million.

And he assured that the dry season is part of global warming, but that there was also neglect in the electrical agencies and “the State does not have the concept of maintenance of the transmission lines of the substations, that is why the previous manager of Celec left” and that The problem of lack of maintenance is not only in the electricity sector, but also in Petroecuador.
