The board of the Electric Corporation of Ecuador (Celec) appointed this December 30 Gonzalo Uquillas Vallejo as the new general manager. He has already held that position on two previous occasions.

Alarms and controversy over a new attempt to declare an emergency to protect Coca Codo Sinclair from regressive erosion

Uquillas Vallejo is an engineer and has more than 40 years of experience in the electrical sector. In 2018, he held the general management of Celec EP for the first time; in 2020 he was Vice Minister of Electricity; And in that same year, and until May 2022, he held the management of the Electric Corporation for the second time, which Nicolás Andrade Laborde took over in June, who he is now replacing.

The change was expected, since in the midst of the controversy over the recommendation given by the director of the Coca River Executive Commission, on December 22, to the then manager to declare an emergency in the contracting of construction works and their inspection of a permeable dam to slow down the regressive erosion of the Coca River, from the Ministry of Energy it was reported that these were “last minute actions of an administration that (was) about to leave”; and they considered that, if they did, they would not have time to freely use the resources in the emergency. “Soon there will be a new Celec manager who will look calmly at the problem. There is no urgency that justifies millionaire hires by hand ”, he anticipated.
