Legal problems continue regarding the appointment of the workers’ member before the Board of Directors of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS).
While the Superintendency of Banks decided a few days ago to classify Richard Gómez, president of the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT), as a member of the workers, obeying a ruling by a judge from Quevedo, a worker from the Municipality of Mejía rejected the issue and has presented a new protection action so that the Superintendency does not continue with the issue. The request for protection action with a precautionary measure presented by German Oña Mateus, representative of the workers of the Municipality of Mejía, was made on December 23 and was accepted by the authority.

For this reason, a hearing has been scheduled for next January 4 to resolve the matter. Thus, a possible qualification is prohibited as long as this action is not carried out.
This Wednesday, December 28, 2022, Gómez tried to assume the vocals. Accompanied by bars that shouted “possession”, he went to the IESS building. From abroad, he said that the Board of Directors should be summoned immediately so that he can participate in it. He said that his qualification was given on December 22 and that the precautionary measure against, which was presented the following day, “the only thing that implies is that the Superintendency of Banks is prohibited from qualifying another candidate as of December 23 and Mercy Maldonado and Richard Gómez’s rating is dated December 22 and the law is not retroactive.” In the end, Gómez did not enter the IESS.
On Tuesday, leaders of the Popular Front rejected the actions of the Quevedo judge. The Popular Front and the other historical trade union centrals support, on the other hand, the pairing made up of Ramiro García and Ramiro Beltrán to occupy said committee. However, the Superintendency of Banks had indicated the impossibility of qualifying any workers’ delegate, among other reasons, because the National Assembly approved a law that establishes other rules for the appointment. In these days, the National Electoral Council (CNE) has already issued a regulation for said appointment.

Meanwhile, Fernando Ibarra, president of the Central de Organizaciones Clasistas (Cedoclat), reported that that day they filed a challenge to Gómez’s qualification.
