On the subject, Rodrigo Gómez de la Torre, representative of the employers in the National Council of Labor and Salaries, comments that these increases, which go hand in hand with the increase in the basic salary, in fulfillment of a campaign promise by President Guillermo Lasso, do not help competitiveness or formality.

He explains that, for example, the dairy sector is in trouble and that for them the salary increase is an increase in operating costs. “We will agree with the increases if they are accompanied by a reform to labor rigidity.” He considers that what has happened with the increases is that they favor those who are already within a formal structure, but it prevents others from entering and rather informality grows. In any case, he says that the business sector will comply with the established minimums. (YO)
