indicators of Unemployment in urban areas present a significant improvement, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC). The body presented this Thursday, December 22, the results of the national survey of employment, underemployment and unemployment for November 2022.
In November 2021, the urban unemployment rate was at 5.8% Y for November 2022 it was at 4.7%. This figure represents a statistically significant reduction. In numbers of people, this means that a year ago in November there were 324,069 unemployed, while this November the figure dropped to 264,159, always in urban areas. This represents a departure from the unemployment ranks of at least 59,910 people.
Meanwhile, general labor indicators, that is, including rural and urban issues, show improvements, but are not statistically significant. A number is said to be statistically significant when the calculated margin of error is exceeded.
In any case, full employment at the national level was in 33.7% in November 2021, but to November of 2022 has risen to 35.6%. This means that a year ago there were 2,857,882 workers in full employment and now there are 2,981,886 in this category. Full employment is one that represents a minimum remuneration of the basic salary, as well as at least 40 hours of work. Regarding underemployment, it dropped from 24.5% to 22.9% in the same period. The figure went from 2,076,425 underemployed to 1,921,319 citizens in underemployment.
Another data that was significant is the one that indicates that “unclassified employment” dropped significantly: it went from 61,244 people to 16,872. This concept refers to employed persons who cannot be classified as adequate, inadequate or unpaid employees due to lack of information on the determining factors. It is built as a residue of the rest of the categories. In unemployment there was also a recovery of the indicators at the national level. Thus, by November 2021 it was at 4.4% and by November 2022 it was at 3.8%, that is, there was a reduction of 55,761 unemployed, going from 374,124 to 318,363 in the aforementioned period.
Meanwhile, although the statistics of the urban unemployment improved, rural unemployment did deteriorate, going from 50,054 to 54,204 (it varied from 1.7% to 1.9%); however, the data is not statistically significant.
Regarding employment by sex, it reveals that there are still gaps between men and women. In November 2022, the adequate/full employment rate stood at 41.3% for men and 27.6% for women. In any case, the overall employment rate stood at 96.6% for men and 95.6% for women in the same month.
Another revealing piece of information from the INEC report indicates that in terms of underemployment, 56% of them are salaried and the other 44% are independent. This structure has varied significantly if one takes into account that in November 2021 the ratio was 49.6% for salaried employees and 50.4% for self-employed. (YO)
