Banana and cocoa beans reach a supermarket chain in Qatar and now an opportunity is being sought for coffee

Just as cocoa and bananas made their way in Qatar, now space is being sought for coffee. The Monoprix supermarket chain carried out in November the first import of Ecuadorian cocoa beans to that country that is hosting the World Cup.

The Embassy of Ecuador in Qatar assured that the cocoa seed was added to the Ecuadorian banana that is already sold in the supermarkets of that French chain, which qualifies as one of the largest in the Arabian Gulf.

Three months after the World Cup, banana exports to Qatar grew 73% and other products also take advantage to enter

Last month a shipment of Ecuadorian bananas arrived at the chain’s six branches in Doha, “being the second time that this fruit will be promoted,” it said in a statement. Monoprix has 480 retail supermarkets in more than 75 countries, where a variety of products such as food, clothing and household items are sold.

This 2022 it was also possible for a new hypermarket of the Lulu chain that was inaugurated in Doha to buy Ecuadorian bananas directly from the producers to the final consumer. Agrícola Cañas shipped the first container of the Cavendish variety on April 25.

Banana exports to the Qatari market grew. The Banana Marketing and Export Association of Ecuador has reported that in the first semester these sales increased by 73.62% compared to the first semester of 2021. From January to July Ecuador exported 528,772 boxes of bananas to Qatar, 224,199 more than in same period of 2021, the year in which shipments to that destination also closed with an increase of 24.45% and a total of 724,143 boxes were exported, 142,269 more than in 2020.

New supermarket in Qatar will sell Ecuadorian bananas

Within the framework of the start of imports of bananas and cocoa beans in Qatar, by the Monoprix chain, Ambassador Pascual del Cioppo met with the general manager for the Arabian Gulf region, Sébastien Farhat, and delivered samples of Ecuadorian coffee high, of the Arabica and Robusta type, from the provinces of Loja, Zamora Chinchipe, El Oro and Chimborazo.

These products have international quality ratings ranging between 85 and 90 points, classifying them in the categories of “excellent” and “extraordinary”, indicated the diplomatic delegation.

According to studies carried out by international experts, coffee consumption in the world will experience an annual increase of 1% to 2% over the next few years, and this is seen as an opportunity for the offer of the Ecuadorian product. (YO)
