A total of 47 canceled flights until Friday registered the Arequipa airport

The operations in the Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón airport of Arequipa are paralyzed after the entry of protesters last Monday. Several passengers were stranded in the city, since there are no land trips to Lima or Ica either due to blockages on the Panamericana Sur highway.

According to the Andean Airports of Peru platform, There are a total of 47 flights canceled until Friday, between arrivals and departures. Most are flights that were scheduled at different times to Lima from airlines such as Latam, Sky Airline and Jet Smart.

There are also canceled trips to Trujillo, Cusco and Piura. The same for arrivals from Tarapoto, Trujillo, Cusco and Lima, which were to take place these two days in Arequipa.

So far, it is known that those in charge of the air terminal will evaluate this Friday the possible resumption of operations or extension of the closure. This first measure would be unlikely since damage was found to 50% of the air navigation equipment, such as runway lights, as well as radars that help night flights. There are also damages to the perimeter fence and it is feared that the protesters will re-enter the airport.

“It would be dangerous to operate again in circumstances like the ones we are experiencing,” explained the airport administrator, Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón, Tito Luque, to The Republic.
