The European Commission proposes to ban horse mackerel fishing and increase the catch of hake

This Sunday begins the negotiation of the distribution of fishing in the EU for 2023, the result of which will be known between Monday and Tuesday.

The 27 fisheries ministers of the governments of the European Union are negotiating as of today the distribution of the fishing fleet of the European Union for 2023a distribution that the Basque fleet is very aware of.

The Government of Spain will request the revision of the Commission’s proposal for Total Allowable Catches (TACs)which raises cuts for other species such as sole (-eleven%), the Cantabrian Norway lobster (-36%) or the pout (-10%) in the Atlantic Sea, where the fleet has interests in 18 of the 26 stocks that will be the subject of negotiation.

The European proposal also contemplates a 10% increase in hake fishing opportunities south after 8 years of cuts due to the recovery of the species confirmed by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).

Brussels has also put on the table a increase for monkfish quota (+12%) or Cantabrian rooster (+33%) although, on the contrary, it foresees a TAC 0 for western horse mackerel due to the bad situation of the species.

With regard to the Mediterranean, the Commission proposes a 7.5% reduction in fishing days compared to 2022, something that Spain rejects.

The representation of the Spanish Government will also advocate for increase the percentage provided for in the compensation mechanism to recover a part, up to 3%, if certain conditions are met and will reiterate the defense of the effectiveness of the use of more selective nets or other measures with which the maximum sustainable yield for some stocks could be reached.

The European Commission once again proposes a maximum catch limit for red shrimp and the fishing effort regime for the longliners for haketwo measures that Spain has appealed before the Superior Court of Justice of the EU.

In addition, the possibility of establishing multi-annual quotas, instead of annual ones, will be analyzed to give predictability to fishermen.
The agreement is expected to be reached between Monday and Tuesday.
