“I come from Durán and I’ve been here waiting since 05:00,” said someone who had come to the store with the conviction of buying a 32-inch television for $99, one of the offers that most attracted customers to that chain. Along with Coello, five more people were waiting to enter, all looking for the same benefit.

Hermann Petzold, commercial manager of Marcimex Retail, highlighted that the discounted products went on sale in limited quantities in the 150 stores nationwide and also highlighted the fact that the black friday coincided with the match of the national team against the Netherlands, of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, which was played from 11:00 a.m. and ended tied at 1.

Earlier, the executive projected a large influx of clients to the sector where several stores are concentrated. In the case of Marcimex, he announced that the expectation for this day was to increase sales between 30% and 40% compared to ordinary days.

“I think that people come to buy around game time and that they will also stay to enjoy Ecuador’s triumph with us,” Petzold said when opening the venue.

The projections were also high from the Guayaquil Chamber of Commerce (CCG). Its executive director, Juan Carlos Díaz-Granados, assured that the commercial sector has expectations of reaching $580 million in sales, 8% more than those generated in the black friday of 2021.

However, the proximity of the match for the national team had the opposite effect, at least in the early hours of the day. The other stores in the sector began to open their doors from 07:00, but customers did not arrive as in previous years.

Roberto Campos, commercial advisor at Almacenes La Ganga, located on Nueve de Octubre and Boyacá, assured that in past years, except in those of a pandemic, customers turned to the early hours of the morning to get the best deals, since the items in promotion they come out in limited quantities.

It was almost 09:00 and along the avenue the atmosphere was soccer, with music from the national team and tricolor balloons; but in the stores there were more sellers than customers. Campos exposed three variables that could affect the demand: the national team match, the economic situation and the pandemic.

Juan Carlos Guerrero, manager of the Coral Hypermarket, on Carlos Julio Arosemena avenue, favored the first option. “The expectation (of sales) is high, well, considering that today the national team is playing and it also calms down in the morning,” explained the executive, who assured that last Thursday, when they also offered discounts by advancing the Black Friday, the influx of customers in the morning was greater.

Guerrero assured that on Thursday there was so much demand that around 400 people and 100 vehicles waited outside the premises to enter, while the establishment was full. On the other hand, this Friday, although there was also a crowd of customers who arrived from early hours, once the doors were opened -at 09:00- they were all able to enter, about 300, without leaving anyone waiting.

José Arteaga was one of those who took advantage of the 2×1 promotion and took four cases of Corona beer. “This is to see the team today against the Netherlands and on Tuesday against Senegal,” he assured as he placed the boxes in the shopping cart.

Meanwhile, in shopping centers the trend was similar. In the Mall del Sol, for example, during the match between Ecuador and the Netherlands, the demand dropped almost completely in the premises. Once the duel was over, there was a slight increase in demand in sportswear stores. However, the shops expected that with the good result achieved by the tricolor team, sales would pick up again in the afternoon session. (YO)
