The production of the Basque industry has grown by almost 8% up to June


Capital goods and energy are some of the sectors that have increased industrial production in the Basque Country. The industrial production index shows a rise of 13.9% in Álava, 11.4% in Bizkaia and 6.9% in Gipuzkoa.

Basque industry production grew by 7.9% in the first six months of this year compared to the same period in 2021, thanks to the increase achieved in capital goods (14.6% more) and energy (13.5%).

The Basque Statistical Institute (Eustat) has reported that in the month of June alone, industrial production grew in the Basque Country by 10.1% year-on-year. Compared to the previous month, May 2022, the activity of the industry increased by 0.5%.

All the large Basque industrial sectors performed positively compared to June last year. The one from the Energywhich includes the production and supply of electricity and oil refining, increased by 24.5%, and equipment goodswhich groups together the manufacture of motor vehicles, the construction of locomotives and railway material, and aeronautical and naval construction, rose by 17.5%.

As for the intermediate goodswhich encompass activities in metallurgy and the manufacture of metal products, the chemical industry, and the manufacture of rubber and plastic products, rose 4.2%.

The consumer goodsmeanwhile, rose by 1.8% year-on-year, thanks to the 4.3% increase in non-durable consumer goods – food processing and preservation activities, the manufacture of cleaning and hygiene products, as well as the clothing manufacturing -, since durable consumer goods -manufacture of furniture and household appliances- fell by 7.6%.

Among the sectors with the most weight in Basque industry, they grew above all transport equipment (27%), the electric power, gas and steam (23.5%) and machinery and equipment (14.6%). In contrast, the lowest increase was in the food, beverage and tobacco industries (2.2%).

By province, the interannual evolution in June of the industrial production index was positive for the three of the CAV: in Alava there was a rise of 13.9%in Biscay of 11.4% and in Gipuzkoa of 6.9%.
