The United States House of Representatives passes two bills to protect abortion

The Lower House of the United States, with a Democratic majority, approved this Friday two bills that seek to restore the protection of the right to abortion in the country, repealed by the Supreme Court on June 24.

The first, entitled the Law for the Protection of Women and which supports access to abortion by enshrining that right in federal law, received 219 votes in favor and 210 against, while the second, which protects interstate travel to receive that service, it was endorsed with 223 in favor and 205 against.

This double regulation has little chance of going ahead when its processing reaches the Senate, where the Democrats have a slim majority and need the support of at least 10 Republicans.

Abortion had been legal throughout the United States since the Supreme Court ruled in 1973 that the state has no right to intervene in a woman’s decision about her pregnancy. But that court, where they now sit six conservative judges and three liberals, revoked that right in June at the federal level by letting each state decide its regulation.

The court ruling annulled the ruling ‘Roe against Wade’ (1973), which protected the right to abortion in the countryand currently 13 of the 50 states impose restrictions on the voluntary interruption of pregnancy and in some, like Texas, the veto is total.

Only a new law, such as the one debated and voted on this Friday in the House of Representatives, can re-impose state regulations.

“History is watching us. We must show our leadership and make sure that a basic right is guaranteed,” Democratic Rep. Tony Cardenas, a representative from California, told the session.

The The Republican side, on the other hand, criticized the bills, considering that they facilitate abortion “on demand” based on “the race, sex or disability” of the fetus. “We need to stop this lie that suddenly abortion is a reproductive health issue,” said Republican Kat Cammack, speaking on behalf of Florida.
