The French Government suspends sanctions against British fishing vessels for the time being

The two sides will meet again on Thursday at the Elysee to try to resolve the fisheries dispute. Initially, the sanctions were to take effect on Tuesday.

The French government has provisionally suspended the sanctions against British fishing vessels that were due to take effect on Tuesday. In order to resolve the fisheries dispute between Paris and London, representatives of the two parties will meet again on Thursday at the ElĂseO.

The origin of the conflict resides in the fishing licenses in the English Channel after the Brexit. The United Kingdom has granted some 200 licenses to the Gallic country, but France claims several dozen more. In response to the reduction in permits granted to French fishermen, the French government last week threatened to ban the landing of British vessels and to tighten sanitary and customs controls.

In recent days, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson have exchanged views during the G20 summit in Rome and the COP26 summit in Glasgow.

Advances in the discussions have led France to suspend any provision until examining the British response on fishing licenses.

According to the commercial agreement of the BrexitEuropean fishermen can operate in British waters provided they can demonstrate that they previously operated there.
