The Prime Minister announced changes in coal mining ahead of the start of the second day of the EU summit in Brussels. One of the topics during the meeting of the heads of governments is the energy crisis and Russia’s suspension of gas supplies.
Mateusz Morawiecki spoke about the need to develop solutions at the EU level. – Prevention is better than cure. Today it is better to think about pan-European mechanisms that will prevent gas blackmail and energy blackmail, said the head of government.
He emphasized that at the summit he intends to talk about restarting coal-fired energy. – There are countries such as Germany, Austria and even the Netherlands, which are returning to coal-based energy on the basis of emergency plans. We have maintained our coal-based energy, we want to increase domestic coal extraction. It is necessary from the perspective of securing for the winter, in the fall, explained the Prime Minister.

During Friday’s panel, European Union leaders will discuss how to cope without Russian gas. German Economy Minister Robert Habeck warned that if Russian supplies remained as low as it is today, some industries will have to be shut down.
Habeck said just before the summit that reducing Russian gas supplies to his country via the Nord Stream gas pipeline was an attack by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The deputy chancellor added that Germany is dealing with a new dimension of the conflict with Russia, and the reduction of gas supplies is an “economic attack on us”. According to Habeck, whom Putin cites, he uses energy as a weapon.
The politician assessed that Putin’s intention was to cause fear of material losses in Germany and Europe, so that the debate over concessions to Putin regarding the war against Ukraine would finally arise.
