Apple, however, will bow and abandon Lightning? iPhone 15 is to be charged via USB Type-C

The proprietary Lightning connector was designed by Apple in 2012 and – starting with the iPhone 5 – is stubbornly used in almost all its mobile devices. And while at the beginning Lightning was much more modern than the standards used then, today (at least according to many people) it does not make sense anymore.

All other phone manufacturers have long since switched to a uniform standard, which has become the equally functional USB Type C. The European Union has long appealed for it, which wants Type C to become a standard in all phones, tablets, cameras or headphones. Apple has even used this connector already, but in its MacBooks and iPads, but not in iPhones.

Apple will bend and finally put on USB

Now it turns out, however, that the American manufacturer may finally yield to pressure from some users and the EU and finally switch to the more widely used USB Type-C. At least, according to reports, Ming-Chi Kuo, a reliable analyst observing Apple’s actions.

According to Kuo, Apple is considering the use of USB Type-C from 2023, so from the premiere of the iPhone 15. The upcoming this year’s iPhone 14 will be equipped with the proprietary Lightning connector.

As the analyst notes, USB Type-C could allow Apple to increase the data transfer speed of iPhones and increase the maximum charging power of the battery. The problem would be the need to adapt the entire iPhone accessories market, due to the lack of backward compatibility with Lightning.

It would, however, be a step in the right direction. For the average user, the Lightning connector means, above all, the need to take an additional cable with you to charge the phone outside the home. Laptop, tablet or headphones (maybe apart from AirPods) can be charged today most often via a type C connector.
