The UK will militarily defend Sweden and Finland in the event that one of them is attacked, with bilateral commitments that anticipate the possible accession to NATO of the two Nordic countries and respond to the growing threat from Russia.

In fact, the Finnish and Swedish authorities intend to present their application for accession to the Atlantic Alliance next weekaccording to sources in the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.

According to the newspaper, the requests from Helsinki and Stockholm to join NATO are advancing at the same time, which could lead to simultaneous accession to the Atlantic Alliance in a context strongly marked by the war in Ukraine.

British Prime Minister, Boris Johnsonhas traveled to Sweden and Finland with a view to providing a “firm and unequivocal” support to both countries, a couple of agreements that, in practice, will force the United Kingdom to intervene in the event that its allies suffer some kind of military threat.

On his first stop, in Sweden, Johnson has stressed the need to help Stockholm while it is in a “gray area”, as it has described the period that will go from when it is expected to apply to join NATO until it is accepted. Stockholm still has to formalize the application for accession, in any case.

“In the event of a disaster or an attack against Sweden, the United Kingdom will come to its aid with whatever it requests,” promised the British Prime Minister, at a press conference with his Swedish counterpart, Magdalena Anderson. Johnson has stressed that this commitment is reciprocal and, therefore, Sweden would also be obliged to help the United Kingdom, reports the BBC.

Andersson has acknowledged that “tensions” have increased due to the Russian “aggression” on Ukraine and, in fact, has recalled that Russia has threatened to “respond” if Sweden finally requests to join the Atlantic Alliance, an organization that Moscow perceives as a threat to its national security.
