Colombian authorities seize 3.8 tons of cocaine that were to be sent to Germany

The drugs were hidden in 217 boxes with 3,901 rectangular packages that were transported to the Urabá Coast Guard Station.

Colombian authorities seized in the Caribbean municipality of Turbo, in the Antioquia department (northwest), a container that was contaminated with 3.8 tons of cocaine that were to be sent to Germany, the Navy reported Monday.

The drug, that institution detailed in a statement, apparently belonged to a group associated with the Gulf Clan, the main criminal gang in the country and whose top boss, Dairo Antonio Usuga, alias Otoniel, was arrested last month.

“The cache was found by Urabá Coast Guard Units, guided with information from Naval Intelligence, inside a container of export merchandise that was on a merchant ship and that would be ready to set sail from the Bahía Colombia anchorage area, in Turbo, with final destination towards Germany ”, added the information.

The drug was hidden in 217 boxes with 3,901 rectangular packages that were transported to the Urabá Coast Guard Station, where the tests of the Prosecutor’s Office were positive for cocaine hydrochloride with a net weight of 3,891 kilograms.

So far in 2021, the Caribbean Naval Force has seized more than 132 tons of cocaine.

On October 25, the United States announced a new strategy to combat drugs in Colombia, which will have as pillars the reduction of production, the development of rural areas and the protection of the environment.

The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) explained in a statement the details of the initiative, the product of a joint working group to fight narcotics.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), coca cultivation in Colombia fell to 143,000 hectares in 2020, 7% less than the area planted in 2019. (I)
