A forest fire of “large proportions” is affecting some 150 hectares of pine trees in the western Cuban province of Pinar del Río, and has not yet been controlled, the official newspaper Granma reported on Wednesday.
“The incident began on Monday night and has not yet been controlled due to how difficult it is to access the place,” explained Andy Valle, deputy chief of the Ranger Corps (CGB) in the province, quoted by the newspaper.
Around 15 forest fires are still active in Guatemala
It is an area known as the Camp, 15 kilometers from the town of Minas de Matahambre, with pine forests some 25 years old, with irregular and intricate terrain, which hinders the action of some 100 firefighters and rangers.
Valle explained that the fire spread quickly, favored by the intense drought and the speed of the winds.
In Cuba, the critical period for forest fires runs from January 1 to May 31, coinciding with the period of greatest drought.
These frequent phenomena represent a threat to biodiversity in the country, which has a forest heritage of four million hectares of forests, according to official sources. (I)
